A Titanic Hero

Acts 28:17-22 (17)

17 And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together: and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.

Scottish evangelist John Harper was traveling to Chicago on the “unsinkable” Titanic.  He had been asked to be the new Pastor of Moody Church. His wife had died a few years before so only his daughter Nana was traveling with him.

On April 15, 1912 the Titanic struck the iceberg and began to sink, Harper put Nana into a lifeboat.  He then ran throughout the ship yelling “Women, children, and unsaved get into the lifeboats!”   Taking off his life jacket he gave it to a frantic passenger.

As he worked to save the lives of people he also endeavored to save their souls.  One survivor recalled that Harper floated near him in the water and called out to him, “Man, are you saved?” The man replied “No I’m not.”  Harper witnessed to him until the waves carried him away.  Later the two drifted back together and Harper asked, “Are you saved now?” “No, I cannot honestly say that I am” came the answer. Again Harper encouraged him to give his heart to the Lord.  Not long afterward Harper went down.

In church service four years later, this man testified, “There, alone in the night, and with two miles of water under me, I believed. I am John Harper’s last convert.”

God gives us opportunities to share our faith in Him.  It is important that we be spiritually alert so that we do not allow these opportunities to pass by unnoticed.
