Useful to the End

Acts 28:23-31 (23)

23 And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.

In his book, “The Body,” Chuck Colson tells how Myrtie Howell shared the gospel.     From the time she was a child she faced many reverses.  She gave her heart to the Lord, however, and He gave her strength to face the hardships each day.

Late in life her health failed and she was placed in a nursing home.  She was depressed.  As she had done many times before, however, she turned to the Lord for help.  She asked, “Lord, what more can I do for you?”  In answer to her prayer, God clearly told her to write to prisoners.  She didn’t know anyone in prison so she wrote a “To Whomever It May Concern” letter and address it to the Atlanta Penitentiary.

The letter was given to the chaplain who sent her the names of eight prisoners.  Later she got more names from Prison Fellowship.  Soon she was writing letters every day to up to 40 prisoners in prisons located all over the United States.  Chuck Colson reported that she said, “I thought my life was over, but these past few years have been the most fulfilling years of my life!”

Why can’t this be replicated in various ways through the lives of many Christians who think the useful days of ministry have come to an end?  God will use us to win people into the kingdom if we will allow ourselves to be used.
