Our newspapers often report miracles from God that we fail to notice. One example took place during World War II.
Walter Lord wrote in “The Miracle of Dunkirk” (pp 272-274) about an amazing event that took place in the summer of 1940. The British military was expecting the greatest military defeat in their history. The Allied troops had been backed up to the European coast near Dunkirk, France by the German blitzkrieg. At that time, however, something strange occurred. Adolph Hitler suddenly brought his German tanks to a standstill just as the British were bracing for disaster. At the same time in England, the King had called for a National Day of Prayer. Thousands crowded into the churches throughout the country to call upon God for deliverance. The hand of God began to move. During the nine days of the Dunkirk evacuation, the stormy English Channel settled down and all was calm. In the meantime, the German Luftwaffe air force was unable to fly as a storm broke out over Flanders. This turn of events gave the whole Allied army of 338,000 soldiers time to regroup and prepare to fight again. Winston Churchill the British Prime Minister called this answer to prayer a “miracle of deliverance.”
