Still Ticking

2 Kings 6:8-16 (16) And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.

Timex Group, one of the largest watchmakers in the world was founded in 1854. Facing competition in the early days they determined to make a dollar watch. In time, technology continued to change the playing field as radium in the 1920’s began to be used to illuminate the numbers.

Still facing ferocious competition in 1956, they hired Cameron Swayze a former NBC news anchor, to market their product. He soon began to develop “torture test” commercials on TV to demonstrate the durability of the watch. The watch was dropped from buildings, beaten with hammers, and rolled over by cars and trucks, and to the amazement of all, after enduring such abuse, the watch although partly destroyed continued to work. To emphasize this, the Timex Watch people penned the slogan; “Timex watch, it takes a licking’ but it keeps on ticking’.”

Often we may feel that we are out numbered, out classed, and out financed. We may tell ourselves that we are losing ground as a church. We may look at the depressing news in the world and feel that the kingdom of God is not doing well largely because of our own feeble attempts.

It is during times such as this that we need to go through the scriptures and look at all the times when God tells us not to fear. When we understand that the Captain of our Salvation is victorious and that we must continue on in His strength rather than ours, we then will be able to see that even though the odds seem to be stacked against us, the end of the book says “We Win.”
