Soli Deo Gloria

1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

German composer and musician, Johan Sebastian Bach, has been generally regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time.  Although he composed secular songs, sacred music was at the center of Bach’s interest most of his life.  Those who have studied his music recognize more than just craft.  A devout relationship with God is clearly evident.  An indication is fervent relationship with God is seen in his compositions.  They were always headed with “J.J.”  The letters stood for “Jesus Juva” which means “Jesus help me.”  His compositions were all ended with the letters “S.D.G.”  These letters stood for Soli Deo Gloria, one of the Five Solae* which were summary statements of the central tenets of the Protestant Reformation   Soli Deo Gloria is a Latin expression meaning “Glory to God alone.”

This sentiment should be at the fore and the aft of our lives.  It should be our waking thought and our prayer as we go to sleep.  In all of the activities of our day we should desire to bring glory to God.  Our thoughts should be governed by this desire.  Our  Glory to God alone should be the agenda of our lives.

*(Sola fide – Faith Alone, Sola Gratia – Grace Alone, Sola Scriptura – Scripture Alone, Solus Christus – Christ Alone and Soli Deo Gloria – Glory to God Alone).
