Ephesians 4:11-13
A pilot needs two instruments whether the airplane is large or small. He needs a compass and an artificial horizon. The compass tells which way is north. The artificial horizon, also known as the attitude indicator, is an instrument that the pilot uses to discern the orientation of the airplane in relation to the Earth’s horizon. It indicates the pitch and the bank of the aircraft. While flying in the clouds or through inclement weather the pilot can become disoriented. His mind will suggest a false reality, therefore, he must rely on these two instruments to stay on course and to remain oriented properly.
The only internal compass and attitude indicator the natural man has within is a conscience that is often out of calibration due to misuse and abuse. Those who know Jesus as their personal Savior, however, have the inner promptings of the Holy Spirit and a recalibrated conscience. These two prompt the child of God to please God and to love his neighbor as himself. Obedience to this inner prompting assures unity that cannot otherwise be achieved.
