Matthew 8:23-27 (26) And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.
The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California was dubbed “the bridge that could not be constructed.” This was due to the severe obstacles of heavy tides, wind, fog, and the San Andreas Fault. In spite of this, work pressed ahead and this engineering masterpiece was finished in May 1937.
The construction took longer than expected due to many casualties. It was dangerous work and many of the men were afraid they would fall into the bay below.
Eventually a huge safety net was placed beneath the construction area. This seemed to make no difference for a time. Then one day, a man fell off the bridge and landed in the net below. All were relieved when they saw that he landed in the net safely and arose smiling. From that moment on, progress on the project leaped ahead.
In 1809 a hangman’s rope was being thrown over a tree limb while Dr. Ephraim McDowell struggled with a decision. Should he perform an operation that had never before been done? Something had to be done soon or Thomas Crawford would die. A mob outside believed the doctor was getting ready to murder the patient. Finally, Dr McDowell cast his personal fears aside and performed the first appendectomy surgery ever done. He and his patient made history that day because one man put his fears aside and did what he believed to be right..
Faith means to take a risk. Jesus says, dare to trust me. We are not given proof. We are merely told to trust in Him. Faith is a choice you must make before the evidence is made available. Sometimes you just have to step out on the water.
