Be Not Dismayed

Luke 12:27 Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

Every time I hear the song “God Will Take Care of You,” I have a vivid memory from my early childhood. I was five years old. The Sheetmetal Worker’s Union had gone on strike and dad had taken a job 75 miles from our home to support our family. In spite of the circumstance, we were a happy family. I remember hearing this song being played on Mom’s old RCA record player in our sparsely furnished apartment.

The author, Civilla Martin, who also wrote “His Eye Is On The Sparrow,” and “The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power” was a minister’s wife who often served as an evangelist in various revival meetings.

One particular Sunday morning her husband was to preach at a church some distance away. Because his wife, Civilla was sick, Walter seriously considered canceling the engagement. Their young son hearing them discuss the matter, however, said something which decided the matter for them. “Father, don’t you think that if God wants you to preach today, He will take care of Mother while you are away?”

While Walter was away at the service his wife inspired by what her son had said wrote the words to this song. That afternoon when her husband returned he sat down at his little Bilhorn organ and composed the music.

Peter expressed this same sentiment that means so much to all who know the saving, protecting, providing power of God. “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” (1 Peter 5:7) So, “Be not dismayed whate’er betide, God will take care of you.”
