All Things are NOT Lawful

1 Corinthians 10:23

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

Recently my wife was having a conversation with a angry lady who told that she was planning to slap another lady in the face.  My wife said, “That is not something a Christian would do.  Jesus would not be pleased to see His people respond in that manner when opposed.”  The lady answered,  “Well, if I sin all I have to do is go to Jesus and ask Him to forgive me.”

“All things are lawful” does not mean “all things are lawful.”  Sin is never lawful.  Anything that would displease God is never lawful.  On the other hand there are things that for conscience sake one Christian cannot do, while another Christian may have complete freedom.  Your Christian brother may have personal convictions that forbid him from playing board games that include dice or a spinner.  You, however, may not have the same personal conviction.  But for the sake of not offending your weaker brother’s conscience you must refrain from playing this type of game when your brother is present because it is not expedient.  Instead of being a spiritual support to him you will cause him to face spiritual conflict, doubt, and possibly disobedience.  James tells us that if we disregard what we believe to be right (whether it is actually sinful or not) we sin because we are disobeying what we believe God has told us to do.  (James 4 :17)
