Zechariah 9:13 When I have bent Judah for me, filled the bow with Ephraim, and raised up thy sons, O Zion, against thy sons, O Greece, and made thee as the sword of a mighty man.
It is interesting to note that many Christians seem to be intent on defending God. Yes, we are to stand for the truth. We are to battle against the spiritual forces of evil. And yet, we must remember, God is not the powerless one who needs a strong arm of deliverance. It is we who depend on Him for our strength, our help, our deliverance and our protection. He is our shield against the fire darts of the enemy.
In 2015 the city of Paris, France suffered a series of coordinated Islamic attacks by a well organized and well armed band of terrorists. 130 people were killed. 416 people were injured, 100 critically. Thomas Gibbons-Neff of the Washington Post described the events. In his article was a picture of one of the shield used by the Paris police. It was riddled with bullet holes, but it did its job protecting the policeman from harm.
In our zeal to serve God we must remember not to reverse the roles of the deliverer and the delivered. We are the ones who must have His protection. He doesn’t need us to guard Him against danger. He is God and we are not. Psalm 3:3 says, But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; My glory, and the lifter up of mine head. Psalm 46:1 reminds us that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
