The Tolerated Sin

Proverbs 23:And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.

In the United States of Excess the buffet is the favorite meeting place for people of all ages.  The “Church of the Bulging Belly” encourages this sin as much as the local diner.  Gluttony is called America’s most tolerated sin.  It is a legal and encouraged addiction.  Not all who are fat are gluttons, and not all gluttons are fat.  However, obesity is often a ready indicator of the problem.  According to a 2006 Purdue study fundamental Christians are the heaviest of all religious groups.  Ken Ferraro, the lead researcher said, “America is becoming a nation of gluttony and obesity and churches are a feeding ground for this problem.”   A  Pulpit and Pew study in 2001 of 2,500 clergy “found that 76% were overweight or obese compare to 61% of the general population at the time of the study.”  The sin of the sanctuary no longer is limited to the monthly potluck dinner.  Many churches now offer donuts, bagels, and coffee before their Sunday morning service.  We condemn other vices.  I wonder how long we will continue to go back for seconds . . thirds?
